I thought I would lump the iPhone news this time, rather than spreading it out across ten different entries, as it worked out pretty well last time.

Apple Pushes Safari 3.1 To Windows Users

Friday, March 21st, 2008 |

Apple recently implemented the addition of Safari browser into Apple Software Update for Windows users. Apple Software Update was previously used to distribute the latest versions of iTunes and Quicktime, because they require each other in order to work. However, after the launch of Safari 3.1, Apple took the aggressive approach to spread its browser to the Windows community. (more…)

Safari 3.1

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 |

This post is best viewed with Safari 3.1.

There’s something you probably thought you’d never read. Well, the 3.1 thing is pretty unlikely, but having something standardized specifically for Safari is quite nice after all the IE headers I’ve seen.

Office 2004 Receives an Update

Sunday, March 16th, 2008 |

For those of you still using Office 2004, you will probably want to install this new update that was just released. Here is what it fixes according to the updater:

This update fixes a vulnerability that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code. For more information about this update, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (KB949357).

If you have Automatic updates enabled, chances are you probably have the update. If you don’t know or just want to make sure, simply go to Downloads and Updates from your Microsoft Office 2004 application’s help menu and receive the update manually.

iPhone SDK in June

Thursday, March 6th, 2008 |

Apple’s Thursday is the new Tuesday event has come and gone, leaving behind presents stamped “Do not open until June”. It seems as though everything dealing with the iPhone has a slightly out of focus date somewhere on the horizon. Flash, the SDK, the iPhone itself.
All gripes and bitterness aside (read: Sprint customer), the iPhone SDK was announced today. What does that mean, you ask? Well, in June we’ll be seeing applications pop up on iPhones with the release of the iPhone 2.0 firmware. And more than likely something like iTunes 8.0 That’s right, you heard it here first. iTunes 8.0.

A return to basics? A blogger too lazy place in another color or look for the most recent iCon (ha) for the clip? You decide for yourself. For now, I just feel as though my dock needs more green.

So, after that lovely diversion, back to the iPhone. The SDK will be released to developers today. It uses a four tier system for creating applications for the phone. From there, there is an emulated source that acts exactly as the iPhone, or you can run applications on the iPhone from your computer to debug in real time.
Applications can be purchased through the iTunes store. The cost is decided by the developer, with Apple receiving 30% of the revenue, and the developer receiving 70%. If the application is free, Apple will not charge to host through iTunes.
The beta for the SDK program can be downloaded if you’re a developer from the Apple site. It costs $99 and unlocks the inner-child feature on your computer.
For those of you without a developer’s account that would still like to play with the new iPhone features, you can send in an application over here to be a beta tester. Unfortunately, it’s not for downloading applications yet. Just things like push email and WPA2. You know, things that would allow you to actually have your phone on the server at work since it’s secure. Ah, if only Apple manufactured a version that didn’t have the camera.

Spore? On an Apple blog? In an entry about the iPhone? Well, yes. Spore is coming to the iPhone/iPod Touch in September. It is the first official 3rd party game for the iPhone. Let’s just hope that when playing on a PC you can see characters running around tagged “Sent from my iPhone”.

iTunes Updated to 7.6.1

Thursday, February 21st, 2008 |

Good news for those of you having problems with iTunes and Apple TV software version 2.0. This update promises to fix those issues and will allow for much smoother compatibility between the two. The update is quite hefty at 44MB, but if you are an Apple TV user, it is almost an essential download. You can get your hands on this update by running Software Update and will probably be able to download this from Apple’s Download Center later on.
