iPhone SDK in June

Thursday, March 6th, 2008 |

Apple’s Thursday is the new Tuesday event has come and gone, leaving behind presents stamped “Do not open until June”. It seems as though everything dealing with the iPhone has a slightly out of focus date somewhere on the horizon. Flash, the SDK, the iPhone itself.
All gripes and bitterness aside (read: Sprint customer), the iPhone SDK was announced today. What does that mean, you ask? Well, in June we’ll be seeing applications pop up on iPhones with the release of the iPhone 2.0 firmware. And more than likely something like iTunes 8.0 That’s right, you heard it here first. iTunes 8.0.

A return to basics? A blogger too lazy place in another color or look for the most recent iCon (ha) for the clip? You decide for yourself. For now, I just feel as though my dock needs more green.

So, after that lovely diversion, back to the iPhone. The SDK will be released to developers today. It uses a four tier system for creating applications for the phone. From there, there is an emulated source that acts exactly as the iPhone, or you can run applications on the iPhone from your computer to debug in real time.
Applications can be purchased through the iTunes store. The cost is decided by the developer, with Apple receiving 30% of the revenue, and the developer receiving 70%. If the application is free, Apple will not charge to host through iTunes.
The beta for the SDK program can be downloaded if you’re a developer from the Apple site. It costs $99 and unlocks the inner-child feature on your computer.
For those of you without a developer’s account that would still like to play with the new iPhone features, you can send in an application over here to be a beta tester. Unfortunately, it’s not for downloading applications yet. Just things like push email and WPA2. You know, things that would allow you to actually have your phone on the server at work since it’s secure. Ah, if only Apple manufactured a version that didn’t have the camera.

Spore? On an Apple blog? In an entry about the iPhone? Well, yes. Spore is coming to the iPhone/iPod Touch in September. It is the first official 3rd party game for the iPhone. Let’s just hope that when playing on a PC you can see characters running around tagged “Sent from my iPhone”.

Tuesday is Coming…

Sunday, February 24th, 2008 |

To those of us who are not aware, Apple has been consistently delivering different goods to us every Tuesday this year. This Tuesday, the long awaited iPhone SDK is rumored to be released. Before you start jumping for joy, initial reports gathered by TUAW tell us that we would at best get an Alpha or Beta version of it with a full release following shortly after. In other words, this might not be what Apple has in mind for us this Tuesday, maybe a beefier iPod Touch or a reworked iPhone is in the agenda? Guess we just have to wait it out and find out.

If you have some info to share or just want to speculate, please feel free to post a comment.
