Mac Mini: A New Hope
There were a lot of rumors over the past few years that the Mini would be removed from Apple’s product line. The Mini is Apple’s affordable Mac aimed at new users, as the company strives to sway a new generation of Switchers. So, as the bridge for Microsoft users to essentially cross when they want to experience the Mac side of things, my guess is that there will always be a budget product to fit that purpose. Most of the time, it’s the Mini.
So, it’s rumored that they are giving new life to the Mini. It will most probably be fitted with Intel’s Penryn Core 2 Duo processor starting at 2.1GHz with 3MB of shared L2 cache, an upgraded 800MHz front-side bus and have the GMA X3100 144MB graphics card similar to the MacBooks.
The last time the Mini was updated was in August 2007. Its average lifespan is 188 days according to MacRumors’ estimation, and right now it is at its 228th day. So we hope to see some changes soon.
The Mac Mini’s fate has never been carved in stone and it has struggled to survive since its PowerPC days. New Mac users are more fanatical nowadays, opting for the shiny MacBook or jumping straight for the MacBook Pro. But I think that there will always be Mini lovers who will be sad to see it leave.
